Hosta Garden Revamp
Kelly and Chris are a busy young family located on a lovely large lot in the west metro. Their desire was to spruce up their front entry way foundation planting and make it low maintenance. Since they had a nice variety of existing hostas doing quite well and it's mainly a shady area, I suggested removing the random/overgrown shrubs and turning it into a hosta only space. They removed the shrubs and in the fall we moved some hostas and divided several larger hostas, grouping like kinds into odd numbers and placing taller ones in the back. Next spring they will divide more hostas and fill in the open spaces. There were also two overgrown spireas doing well in the sunnier space near the driveway so those will be trimmed way back and hostas will be filled in around them.

Kelly & Chris - Testimonial
I can’t say enough good things about Kathleen! We were very impressed with her overall knowledge and ability to listen to our specific needs and come up with a solution that was just right for us. We were shocked how easy everything became with her advice and expertise! We asked Kathleen to look at our front landscaping and worried that we might need to start completely from scratch. We were delighted when she was able to give us some solutions to clean up the space, using mostly plants we already had, and giving us the permission to get rid of the plants that were no longer working. She shared strategies to move and split some of our existing plants, giving the entire area a new cleaner look! With her help, we turned our overgrown and messy front landscaping into a beautiful hosta garden that will be easy for us to maintain for years to come. We would not have known how to do this without Kathleen’s knowledge and techniques. I highly recommend her for all of your gardening and landscape design needs!

Front Entry
This is the main focal point of the entryway. This barberry is too tall and spindly and the homeowners didn’t like it but were conflicted about removing a healthy plant. They needed “permission” to take it out which I gave them! Since they really like hostas, I recommended they remove the barberry and divide and place their favorite hosta in that space.

Walkway
The two potentillas in the background are scraggly, don’t flower well in part shade and they just don’t fit with the hostas. They were removed and in the spring the existing taller hostas will be divided to fill in the space in groups of three of the same variety.

Stairs to Walkway
The two spireas in the background are doing well however they are too large and encroaching on the two existing hostas. The low-lying phlox in the front will be removed. The open space will be filled in by either dividing the existing hostas or dividing a favorite hosta from the walkway section. These will be planted and arranged in groups of three of the same variety.
